Prior to today, there have been three world events that have been permanently engraved in my memory: 1) when the Challenger exploded, 2) when the Berlin Wall fell and 3) 9-11. For moments 1 and 3, I can remember exactly where I was and how I felt – and the emotional state of those around me.

Today, the inauguration of Barack Obama added to the list of these significant events that I will forever remember. The Foundation put work on hold this Tuesday morning for everyone to come together to witness this historic day. The events were played on the big screen in the board room and there were bagels and juice for all. With the exception of the appropriate applause and a few sniffles, the room was silent. We were mesmerized by the events, the mass number of people, the hope, emotion, and Obama’s brilliant and inspiring speech. I loved (as I’m sure everyone did) the symbolism and sense of meaning in every aspect of the ceremony. From the location of the inauguration and inaugural party, to sharing the “swearing in” bible with Lincoln, to the timeliness of inauguration day, to listening to Aretha Franklin sing “My Country Tis of Thee”. Never before has that song had more meaning for me. Never have I felt so much hope or emotion over the election of our nation’s President. I will never forget the power of this morning’s ceremony – or how our world got a little brighter and our nation a little better on January 20, 2009.
