Believe it or not, Bruneau is home to the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America -- 470 feet high.  I've been wanting to visit the dunes the last couple of years and we finally made it out there on 12-30-09.  We couldn't have asked for a prettier day. It had snowed the night before and the sun shone all afternoon.  We hiked the nearly 6 mile loop from where we parked at the base of the lake, up the steep ridge to the top of the main dune, along the dune ridges and back along the lake to the car.  The part of the lake that wasn't frozen over was home to thousands of geese that squawked like crazy and when they flew all at once - darkened the skies.  It was pretty impressive.  The cold and the snow hardened the sand and made it what could have been the easiest sand hiking ever.  By the time we were done with the loop and heading back to the car, the moon had risen and the sun was setting - it made for some gorgeous pictures.  Lee took a couple hundred but we're having some technical difficulties and haven't been able to post them to our photo site.  We'll let you know when we do!  For now, here are some of our favorites.
