Just a few short months ago, my dear Uncle Bert was diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. We were blessed with a miracle the weekend of our celebration at Wallowa Lake when he and his family were able to join us. It was a tender mercy - a gift for all of us. Shortly after he returned home from Wallowa Lake, his health declined rapidly and he passed away just a week later.

We were unable to be at the hospital when he passed away, but I am so grateful for the chance I had to say goodbye to Uncle Bert and for the last, fond memories that we made at Wallowa Lake.

Lee and I are fortunate to have compassionate employers and we were able to go to Utah for 5 days. We were touched and amazed by the numbers of people that flocked to Mendon, Utah to honor my Uncle. It was incredible. The furthest traveler came from Korea for the services on Saturday. My Uncle Bert was an incredible man -- one who was well respected and loved around the world. Their neighbors and friends kept supplying meals after meals during the days we were there. And not only were they providing meals for the Tanner family, but for the 40 other people who were staying at the Lone Pine Ranch over the weekend. It truly was amazing. Both the quantities of food that arrived and how rapidly it was ALL consumed. Nothing lasted more than 1.5 hrs. Unfortunately that was also true of THE BEST chili I've ever had (thanks Georgie!)

The services and tributes to Bert were wonderful. Very touching and heartfelt. Some of them were drowned up by the rain and hail that came pelting down in full force at the cemetery. But, that was Bert for you. He LOVED exciting weather. And I love(d) him. He lived the fullest life of anyone I have ever met. I hope to have learned a little something from him.

During this somber weekend, I was impressed with the strength of the family and the humor that still was present in the house. And of course, not to mention the capacity of the Tanners to make this tragic event a memorable reunion for all who came.
